Review of article "In classroom of Future, Stagnant Scores
Bells and whistles look and sound nice but the reality is that it is only as effective as the teacher who presents it. Technology seems to be the push everywhere, but as seen in the Kyrene School District, test scores have not improved despite the ambitious efforts of its administrators. Using computer centric classrooms to attract students will attract state dollars; it makes you wonder about the motives of those in charge. "Hope and enthusiasm are soaring here but not test scores." Mrs. Furman. Any teacher would be excited to have a 21st century classroom, but teacher training is essential to the goals and purposes of the ideal minded decision makers.

Dee, I agree that teacher training is essential. A lot of times, as you said, the motive for purchasing such expensive technology is to better the image of the school. Unfortunately, teachers are expected to teach themselves how to use the technology, which results in poor use of the technology putting students at a disadvantage.
ReplyDeleteIf I can, I'd like to add on to your analogy. "Bells and whistles look and sound nice, but have you ever given a bell or whistle to a small child? All you get is noise. Loud, obnoxious noise." Much like with teachers that don't use tech appropriately, students won't understand what is going on, they will eventually just tune out the noise. Isn't that the exact opposite reason for using technology in the classroom? Food for thought.
